How I Saved $2,400 a Year by Understanding De Minimis

The de minimis threshold is the maximum value of imported goods that can enter a country duty-free and tax-free, with minimal customs formalities. Each country sets its own threshold, and exceeding it triggers customs duties, VAT/GST, and clearance fees. Importers and ecommerce sellers who understand de minimis rules can legally reduce their landed costs on small shipments.

Thresholds by Country (Current Data)

Here are the current thresholds for countries my clients import into most often:

CountryThreshold (Local Currency)Threshold (USD Approx.)What it Covers
United States$800$800Duty-free, tax-free if shipped by any carrier
European Union€150~$165Duty-free but VAT may still apply
United Kingdom£135~$172Duty-free and VAT-free
Japan¥10,000~$70Duty-free and tax-free
AustraliaA$1,000~$670Duty-free and GST-free
SingaporeS$400~$300GST-free for goods below this value
CanadaC$20 (gifts)~$15Low threshold; most commercial imports taxed
China¥1,000~$140Personal parcels only, not commercial

How to Structure Shipments Around the Limits

Successful ecommerce importers use these strategies to stay below the de minimis threshold:

  • Split large orders into multiple smaller shipments (each under the threshold)
  • Ship directly to end customers instead of consolidating in a warehouse first
  • Use express couriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS) that handle de minimis clearance efficiently
  • Price products strategically: if your product costs $850, see if you can adjust it to $800 for US-bound shipments
  • Check if parts vs finished goods have different classifications that may lower dutiable value

Going Over Changes Everything

When a shipment exceeds the de minimis threshold, customs requires formal entry processing. This means you'll pay: (1) customs duty based on HS code, (2) VAT/GST at your country's rate, (3) customs broker/clearance fees ($25–$150 depending on complexity), and (4) potential storage fees if clearance is delayed. The total added cost can be 20–40% of the product value.

Check Eligibility in One Click

Our calculator automatically checks your shipment against the destination country's de minimis threshold. If your cargo value (product total + shipping + insurance) falls below the threshold, the calculator zeroes out duty, VAT, and clearance fees — giving you an accurate picture of your actual costs. Try it: select a US destination with product value under $800 and see the "De Minimis reached" badge appear.
