When Does LCL Actually Save You Money? (The Math)

FCL (Full Container Load) means you charter an entire container exclusively. LCL (Less than Container Load) shares a container with other shippers. Approximately 60% of containerized trade moves via FCL, 40% via LCL. The breakeven point is typically 15-18 CBM - below that LCL is cheaper, above that FCL wins.

Choosing correctly saves 20-50% on shipping costs. Your decision depends on shipment volume, time sensitivity, product value, and budget.

How LCL Pricing Works (And the Gotchas)

LCL pricing uses two metrics: actual weight in kg OR volumetric weight (L x W x H in cm / 6000). You pay for whichever is higher. LCL also charges: consolidation fee ($15-40), CFS handling ($30-60), document fee ($25-50), and delivery order ($20-40).

Example: A 10 CBM textile shipment (5 tons) from China to US: LCL = 10 CBM x $15 = $150 + $150 handling = $300 total. FCL 20ft = $3,000+. For 10 CBM, LCL saves 90%! At 22+ CBM, FCL becomes cheaper per CBM.

My Decision Rule

  • Choose FCL when: shipment over 18 CBM, fragile/high-value goods, need faster transit, require tracking/seal control, shipping food/chemicals/hazmat
  • Choose LCL when: shipment under 15 CBM, ordering samples/test quantities, product value is low, importing infrequently
  • LCL is especially cost-effective for startups testing new products - ship 1-5 CBM to validate demand without committing to full container cost

Use the Calculator to Compare

Enter your shipment dimensions and weight. The calculator: (1) calculates volumetric weight, (2) compares LCL vs FCL costs for your route, (3) recommends the most economical option, (4) includes handling, documentation, and port charges. The shipping cost line in your landed cost breakdown reflects the cheapest viable container option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum size for FCL 20ft?

No minimum - you can ship 1 CBM in 20ft. Economically, FCL makes sense only above 18 CBM. Below that, LCL is cheaper.

How much can I save with LCL vs FCL?

For small shipments (<5 CBM), LCL saves 60-80% vs FCL. At 15 CBM costs are similar. Above 20 CBM, FCL is 10-20% cheaper.

Does LCL take longer than FCL?

Yes, adds 3-7 days because the consolidator fills the container before sailing, and deconsolidation adds time at destination.
