Frequently Asked Questions
What are landed costs?
Landed costs are the total cost of getting a product from a foreign supplier to your doorstep. This includes the purchase price, international freight, insurance, customs duties, VAT, clearance and port fees, and inland freight. Without calculating landed costs, importers risk selling at a loss.
Why are landed costs important for importers?
Many importers only consider the factory price and shipping when pricing their products, letting duties, taxes, and fees eat into profits. Knowing your true landed costs lets you set the right retail prices, identify the cheapest sourcing countries, and avoid unexpected fees at customs.
What fees are included in a landed cost calculation?
A complete landed cost calculation includes seven components: Product Price (FOB or EXW), International Freight (sea/air/express), Marine Insurance (typically 0.3% of CIF value), Customs Duties (based on HS code and trade agreements), VAT (of the destination country), Customs Clearance & Port Fees, and Inland Freight from the arrival port to your warehouse.
How do HS codes affect duty rates?
HS codes (Harmonized System) classify products into categories, each with a specific duty rate. For example, computers (HS 8471) have low or zero duties, while clothing and footwear (HS 61-64) can have 12-25% duties. Entering an HS code in this calculator adjusts the duty estimate for your product category.
What is the De Minimis threshold?
The De Minimis threshold is the maximum value of goods that can be imported duty-free and tax-free into a country. In the US, this applies to shipments under $800 (Section 321). The EU threshold is €150, UK is £135, and Australia is AUD 1,000. If your cargo value falls below the threshold, this calculator automatically exempts duties, VAT, and clearance fees.
How can I reduce my landed costs?
Strategies include sourcing from countries with free trade agreements (e.g., Vietnam to EU, South Korea to US), choosing sea freight over air freight for non-urgent shipments, consolidating shipments to lower per-unit costs, classifying products under lower HS codes, and leveraging De Minimis thresholds by splitting large orders.
